KUMITE
Kumite is where Karateka practice attack, block and counter attack with an opponant in a controlled manner. There are a number of different types of kumite from basic one step sparring (Ippon Kumite) through to free sparring (Jiyu-Kumite). However they are all designed to prepare the Karate-ka for the actual application of Karate.
Kihon ippon kumite Basic one step sparring
Sanbon kumite Basic three step sparring
Gohon kumite Basic five step sparring
Kaeshi ippon kumite One step return sparring
Jiyu-ippon kumite One step semi-free sparring
Okuri jiyu-ippon kumite Two step semi-free sparring
Jiyu-kumite Free sparring

By practicing Kumite we learn not only control and respect for our training partner but we also learn and develop our understanding of Maai and Tai Sabaki
Maai (distancing)
Controlling the distance between oneself and the opponent is often the decisive factor in kumite. Being aware of the distance to target will determine which techniques will be the most effective and the subsequent ability to pull those techniques before striking a training partner is only possible with appropriate distancing.
Tai Sabaki (body shifting)
Taking your body "offline" to negate an opponant's attack whilst remaining in distance to effectively execute your own counter attack.
